More gay Dumbledore

Well, Dumbledore and his gay, gay self have taken over my brain; I really have to get off the Internet, I have a Chinese history midterm on Tuesday. Anyway, I've read loads and loads of reactions to Dumbledore's being gay, and I've noticed a lot of people saying that there's nowhere in the books it would have worked to tell people. While I agree that sticking "Dumbledore's gay!" into the book wouldn't have worked, DH had largely to do with Harry finding out the truth about Dumbledore's past. It's not so much important that Dumbledore's gay as it is that he was in love with Grindelwald, if that makes any sense. Given that the book already had enough subtext that a huge band of shippers formed hours after the book's release, there wouldn't have been much JKR would have had to add.

This is my how-Harry-could-have-found-out scenario, revised slightly since we found out that "unrequited" was the reporter and not JKR. Harry and Dumbledore are in that afterlife King's Cross:

"I was frustrated with my family responsibilities," Dumbledore said. "I was desperate to feel as important as I had at school, I was taken with Grindelwald's ideas, I was in love - "

"You were in love?" Harry said, confused.

Dumbledore looked at him and suddenly he understood.

"Oh," he said, feeling stupid. "I didn't know that you and Grindelwald - "

"It felt as though we were compatible in every way," Dumbledore said. "Until the day that - that Ariana died..."

Move onto Ariana, we've got the picture. Or the letter from Dumbledore to Grindelwald that Harry reads could have been ended with "I love you, [signed] Albus".

People have said that Dumbledore being gay would have dominated the book, but I don't think it would have if Harry's reaction to it didn't. His reaction to "Who's Cedric, your boyfriend?" is to be mad that Dudley heard him talking in his sleep, not to be mad that Dudley's saying he's gay, so I think it could be believable to have Harry's reactions modified from "OMG, Dumbledore was friends with Grindelwald, a dark wizard!" to "OMG, Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald, a dark wizard!" and not "OMG, Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald, a man!" Finding out your headmaster once plotted to take over the world with a dark wizard has to beat your headmaster being gay when it comes to shock value, right?

Or maybe JKR could have really done something with Dumbledore/Grindelwald, perhaps paralleled it to Snape/Lily in that Snape-Dumbledore's love for Lily-Grindelwald greatly affects the course of his life. She was already breaking down "Dumbledore, the eternally wise and kindly mentor", so she could have just gone for it. We were wondering if he kept his sister locked in the cellar, for heaven's sake, so would finding out he was gay have really shaken our image of him any more? We found out that Tom Riddle was conceived on what's essentially a magical date rape drug without rape drugs overshadowing the plot of HBP. I think we could have found out Dumbledore loved Grindelwald without homosexuality overshadowing the plot of DH. And if we couldn't, well, maybe that would be our problem, not JKR's or the series's.
